Barbara Hicks

     Originally from Hanover, Barbara moved to Toronto after high school to attend university. She obtained an Honors Bachelors Degree in Social Work in 1991. After working for a number of years as a social worker in Toronto, Barbara later returned to school to study law, obtaining her LL.B from the University of Windsor in 2002. She summered and articled at the Toronto office of Miller Thomson LLP and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2003. Interested in pursuing her studies in corporate law, in the fall of 2003 she undertook a Masters of Law at the University of Cambridge, England specializing in Corporate Law. While there, she was a member of the Darwin College rowing team.


     Barbara returned to Hanover as a partner at Hicks & Hicks in 2004. She represents a variety of clients in the areas of real estate and mortgages, business law, estate planning and estate administration.


     Barbara is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Canadian Bar Association (Ontario), the Grey and Bruce Law Associations and the Society of Adjudicators and Regulators of Ontario (SOAR).

     In addition to being in private practice, Barbara serves as a part-time Member of the Social Security Tribunal, where she hears cases involving the appeal of Employment Insurance Act decisions. Previously, Barbara was a part-time adjudicator for the Safety, Licensing Appeals and Standards Tribunal (SLASTO) from 2016-2018.


     Barbara is passionate about her community and has a long history of community involvement. In appreciation of her lengthy volunteer service, Barbara was recognized by the Hanover Chamber of Commerce as the 2015 Citizen of the Year. Barbara has served on the executive of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce in various roles since 2006, including President in 2013/2014. She was a Governor on the Board of the Hanover and District Hospital from 2009 to 2018. She served as Chair of the Board from 2014 to 2016. Barbara was a Trustee on the Hanover Public Library Board from 2004 to 2010. Barbara is currently a Co-Chair of the Law Society’s Annual Solo & Small Firm Conference which is held in Toronto every June. In support of women in business in the region, Barbara serves on the Women of Wellington and Saugeen Area (“WOWSA”) committee which organizes educational and networking events for women business owners.
