Selwyn Hicks

     Graduating from the University of Windsor with both a degree in Law and a Masters in Business Administration, Selwyn was called to the Ontario Bar in 2003. Selwyn began practicing law in Hanover with Stephen Barker in the fall of 2003. Prior to this, Selwyn worked in the legal department at the Children’s Aid Society in Windsor and at a boutique Toronto law firm specializing in international business law and intellectual property.


     A partner at Hicks & Hicks, Selwyn practices primarily in the areas of real estate and wills/estate planning. In recent years, Selwyn has developed expertise defending clients who have been charged with Smoke Free Ontario Act violations. Helping to shape the law, Selwyn has a number of reported decisions, including at the Ontario Divisional Court and Ontario Court of Appeal.

     Selwyn is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association (Ontario), as well as the Grey and Bruce County Law Associations. Selwyn has served as a member on numerous boards and committees over the years. Selwyn has also played an instrumental role in establishing a gymnastics club, the Hanover Aerials, in the Town of Hanover.


     A lover of politics, Selwyn served on Hanover Council from 2006 – 2022. He served two terms as Councillor and two terms as Deputy Mayor. In addition, Selwyn served as Warden of the County of Grey in 2019 and 2021. Selwyn is currently appointed as the Town’s representative on the Hanover Police Board, where he is the current Chair. In addition, Selwyn is a member of the Owen Sound Affordable Housing Group.


     Selwyn served in 2017/2018 on MPP Michael Coteau’s Working Group on Child & Family Wellbeing, which was assisting the Minister to implement the new Children, Youth & Families Act, 2017.
